In the field with the Zukunftsrot: inspiration for the Metzeschmelz district
Last Saturday, the Zukunftsrot members gathered for an inspiring visit to
Esch-sur-Alzette and Sanem, more precisely to the Belval district, in the heart of
emblematic territories of urban reconversion.
Objective: to observe, exchange and draw inspiration from concrete experiences to feed the
reflection on the future Metzeschmelz district.
The morning began at Nonnewisen, a neighborhood in Esch-sur-Alzette that illustrates the
success story of a development combining affordable housing, a mix of functions and quality of life.
Guided by Madame Fagot of the City of Esch-sur-Alzette’s Municipal Works Division –
Administration de l’Architecte et du Développement Urbain, the Zukunftsrot members were able to see how urban planning and attention to everyday use are reflected in the field.
The tour then moved on to Belval Nord, a dense neighborhood that has been under development since 2009
and is nearing completion. This district offers a lifestyle close to greenery, inspired by the concept of living in the landscape.
Passing through Sanem’s “Um Belval” park, the group joined teams from Tralux Construction, who presented their two projects for Central Square, the future living and business hub at the heart of the Belval Square Mile.
Throughout the day, the Zukunftsrot members were accompanied by the Zeyen & Baumann office, which together with the Agora team provides support for the participatory workshops as part of the 3ᵉ cycle of participatory work around housing.
Their role: to facilitate dialogue between citizens, institutions and local players to build a shared vision of the future Metzeschmelz district.
These visits are a key stage in the participatory process.
By discovering projects that have already been completed, participants can better visualize the challenges of a new sustainable neighborhood: the mix, diversity and quality of housing; public spaces, mobility, and above all, daily life.
At AGORA, we’re convinced that the city of tomorrow is built together – thanks to
listening, exchange and real-life experience.
